For about 40 years Cyprus has been physically divided
, and playing host to the United Nation’s third longest peacekeeping mission. The well-oiled narratives of the Greek-Cypriot and the Turkish-Cypriot communities official histories have left little room for dialogue or mutual understanding. A new documentary funded by the Norway Grants raises questions that resonate with every frozen conflict on the notions of truth, history and victimhood.

The screening will be followed by a panel discussion.

The panel:
Rebecca Bryant and Stefanos Evripidou
Moderator: Stein Tønnesson

Rebecca Bryant is A. N. Hadjiyiannis Senior Research Fellow at the European Institute, London School of Economics. She is an anthropologist of politics and law whose work has focused on ethnic conflict and displacement, border practices, transitional justice, and contested sovereignty on both sides of the Cyprus Green Line, as well as in Greece and Turkey. She has written, among many other books; The Past in Pieces, Belonging in the New Cyprus.

Stefanos Evripidou is one of the directors of the film Birds of a Feather. He is also Chief Reporter at the English-Language National Newspaper Cyprus Mail.

Stein Tønnesson is a Research Professor and former Director at The Peace Research Institute, Oslo, PRIO.

The film:

Birds of a Feather
Stories From a Conflict Zone

On the southeastern edge of Europe, two communities remain divided on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus, playing host to UN's third longest peacekeeping mission after Kashmir and the Middle East.

This documentary looks at the contrasting personal memories formed in a post-conflict space after decades of physical separation. The well-oiled narratives of each community's official histories have left little room for dialogue or mutual understanding.

The film raises questions that resonate with every frozen conflict on the notions of truth, history and victimhood.

This event is part of the National Science Week (Forskningsdagene) and is organised by The Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, PRIO and The Oslo Documentary Cinema (Oslo Dokumentarkino)
