suffered a civil war from 1989 till 2003. The escalation from growing
internal conflicts to a civil war started with Charles Taylor's
military coup in 1989. Since then the war went on in two phases, 1989 -
1996 and 1999 - 2003. ---------Leymah Gbowee, with a basis in the organization Women's Peacebuilding Network, mobilized a large group of women to stop the violence. Without weapons they demanded peace and refused to accept the power of the armed parties in the conflict. The film Pray the Devil Back to Hell portrays Leymah Gbowee’s fight and how Liberian women managed, through peaceful means, to force the peace process forward. Norway profiles itself as a peace nation, and is also committed to the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on women, peace and security. This resolution states the importance of supporting local women´s peace initiatives and involving women in peace processes. To what extent does Norway support women's grassroots movements in conflict areas? Can such grassroots movements make a difference? --------- The film Pray the Devil Back to Hell is on the shortlist for the Oscar nominations. Leymah Gbowee has been awarded the Blue Ribbon for Peace by Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, and is building Women, Peace and Security Africa, a women's peace building organization in Ghana that will act to build relationships across the West African Sub region in support of women's capacity to prevent, avert and end conflicts.
